The Jelenia Góra Theatre exists in the town of Lower Silesia region, in the South-West of Poland. Jelenia Góra is situated close to the German and Chech borders, in a picturesque valley at the base of the Karkonosze mountains and belongs to so called Euro-region.
After the revision of the borders, following the Yalta Agreement, Jelenia Góra became Polish. Most Germans had to leave and the town was populated by Poles from the East. The Polish City Theatre in Jelenia Góra was established in summer 1945 just after the end of the war and was the first Polish-speaking stage in Lower Silesia. It is situated in a modernist style theatre building from the beginning of the 20 century. The building is one of the most beautiful historical monuments in the town.
The organisation of the Jelenia Góra Theatre is made up of two professional theatres: The Drama Theatre in centre of Jelenia Góra and The Animation Theatre situated in the Spa Park in Cieplice, part of the town. The Drama Theatre is named after Cyprian Kamil Norwid – the great Polish poet and playwright of 19 century. It has two stages: a big stage for 500 people and the small one, called Studio Stage, for 100 people.
The Jelenia Góra Theatre is led by two directors: Bogdan Nauka, both the General Director (since 2001) and the Artistic Director of The Animation Stage (since 1994) and Małgorzata Bogajewska, the Artistic Director of the Drama Stage (since 2004).
DRAMA STAGE
During the directory of Małgorzata Bogajewska the Drama Stage has been focused mostly on modern, contemporary plays. The young directors, set designers and musicians have been invited. The Theatre has attracted a younger audience with original theatre projects, like “The time for new drama”, the cycle of open reading rehearsals – presentations of the newest and most controversial dramaturgy both from Poland and abroad.
In the season of 2005/06 the Drama Stage has prepared three premiers: “Red noses” by Peter Barnes, “Rum and vodka”, a solo-play by Conor Mc’Pherson and “The Honor of Samurai” by Adam Rapp. Currently two young directors are working on two shows: the play by contemporary Russian playwright Nikolaj Kolada “Merylin Mongoł” (Studio Stage) and a modern version of Shakespeare “Romeo and Juliet” (Big Stage).
ANIMATION STAGE
The Animation Theatre is continuing its work on puppet performances aimed mostly at children. At the moment in the repertoire there are Andersen tales, local folklore stories and performances based on modern literature for children. The Animation Theatre performs also huge outdoor spectacles for adults and children, like “The Ghost of Chojnik Castle” or “The Postcard from Karkonosze mountains.” The most recent show is “Decameron” by Boccaccio, very well received by the audience and critics. The performances of Animation Theatre are travelling all over Poland and often are presented in Germany.
FESTIVALS
The Jelenia Góra Theatre is internationally known for its theatre festivals: “The International Festival of Street Theatre” organized each Summer since 1983 and “The Jelenia Góra Theatre Meetings” led since 1968. Last year edition of the “Meetings” had a trans-border character with representatives from Poland,. Czech Republic and Germany.
