Theater der Jungen Welt Leipzig
Leipzig, Germany
The Theater der Jungen Welt one of the most renowned youth theatres in Germany, is Leipzig’s theatre for children, adolescents and young adults. It was founded on the 7th of November 1946 as the first professional German-speaking youth theatre.
In its East-German time it was part of the Leipzig Theatre Combination (comprising of Drama theatre, Opera and the Theater der Jungen Welt) under a General Director.
It was made into an independent theatre with its own direction after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. On the 11th of October 2003 the Theater der Jungen Welt moved into its new own theatre in the Theaterhaus (Theatre House) Leipzig on the Lindenauer Market.
The theatre has a large auditorium (up to 230 seats) and the “ First Floor” (ca. 55 seats), as well as the mobile Theatre Bus (up to 40 seats). The Theater der Jungen Welt performs in other venues such as schools and kindergarten and also – in cooperation with the relevant organizations – other performance spaces in Leipzig and the surrounding region.
The performances are Drama theatre or Puppet theatre as also a combination of the two. Modern aesthetic forms of Dance Theatre, Performance Art and Improvisation Theatre are produced, as are also plays where the actors work together with non-actors and/or with student-clubs and youth-clubs in which plays are created with professional directors and shown in performance.
In these recent years larger-scale projects have increased in importance. They are normally based on specific themes (e.g. “Leipzig Worlds – a Week’s Festival of Cultures”) where many different kinds of performance forms are brought together.
The Theater der Jungen Welt is therefore a youth theatre, which sees itself artistically, and socio-culturally situated in here and now, close to the lived world of contemporary young adults and children.
The Theater der Jungen Welt has 45 employees, from which 12 are actors and 2 are puppeteers. With a current repertoire of 25 productions and 13 – 15 new productions each season, the Theater der Jungen Welt presents ca. 500 performances annually before an audience of more than 40.000 people.
In 2002 the reputed and experienced theatre director and youth theatre-director Jürgen Zielinski was appointed General Director of the Theater der Jungen Welt. Since then the reputation of the Theater der Jungen Welt has risen and it has won an even wider audience. Under Jürgen Zielinki’s direction, the theatre, tuned in to the demands of its public, with its defining interest in producing new productions and daring projects and with a strong emphasis on the use of music, has had a lot of success also with the critics, which is mirrored in its many invitations to theatre festivals (e.g. Augenblick Mal! – Berlin, Triangel – Constance, Festival Radosti – Brno, Czech Republic).
