Teatro Guirigai

Guirigai is a private touring theatre company, which receives now and again economical support from the Ministry of Culture, the Community of Madrid, Junta de Extremadura and the City Council of Los Santos de Maimona.
The Company was founded in 1979 and actually its headquarters is located in Los Santos de Maimona, a rural town in the Southwest of Spain, where the Company has created a Multidisciplinary Art Centre to develop educations and cultural projects, which has a theatre about 250 capacities.
Guirigai´s team is composed of the manager also actress, Magda García-Arenal; the dramatist-artistic director, Agustín Iglesias; the dramatist Miguel Murillo; an administrative secretary; a technical maintenance director and, according to the season activities there are between 7 or 15 actors employed, some of them also working in the educations projects.
The Company unites old traditions with a modern, dynamic and efficient style; it produces at least one production per year and performs texts, which derive from Spanish Renaissance and Baroque classic such as Fernando de Rojas, Lope de Vega or Calderon de la Barca to 19th and early 20th century writers like Benito Perez Galdos, García Lorca, Darío Fo and texts by the dramatists of the Company. Also it has produced numerous street shows, creating a theatre style of their own through mask work, live music, pyrotechnics and the transformation of urban space.
Guirigai has carried out some anthropological research studies in Spain, Portugal, Cuba and Brazil, some of which have develop into theatre co productions.
